Social Comparison

WHAT IT IS

Social comparison / appearance framing (a body, a home, an income or a result shown as the standard). One striking example is placed where the ordinary range would be, with the spread and the cost of getting there cropped out.

WHY IT WORKS

Comparing is a measuring shortcut: shown one example, the mind treats it as the baseline. The post supplies only the example — never the range, the count of people it did not work for, or the money and time behind the shot — so the frame does the arguing.

HOW TO SPOT IT

  • A before/after with no count of how many tried and stayed 'before'
  • One body, home or income captioned as normal, typical or just discipline
  • The result is shown; the cost, the lighting and the edit are not

HOW TO DEFUSE IT

Ask what the frame leaves out: how many tried, what it cost, and what the ordinary range looks like. One example is a data point, not a standard.

ASK YOURSELF

Is this showing me a result, or setting a bar?
